Project description
Faced with the historical imbalance of water resources between the East and West of Réunion Island, the West Coastal Irrigation (ILO) project was launched to secure water supply and support the agricultural, industrial, and economic development of the West coast. Part of a comprehensive and sustainable resource management approach, this structuring program is based on the transfer of water from the windward coast to the deficit areas of the leeward coast.
The development constitutes one of the most significant hydraulic projects carried out on the island. It includes water intake structures, an extensive network of transfer tunnels, a main reservoir of 50,000 m³, as well as a set of adduction and distribution infrastructures allowing the supply of various uses across the territory.
By promoting a more balanced distribution of resources among the regions of the island, the project contributes to securing water supply, the development of economic activities, and the adaptation of the territory to the challenges of sustainable resource management.
