Project description
The project consists of modernising aging public irrigation schemes which have been in operation for approximately 60 years in the lower Medjerda valley. Its aim is to rationalise the use of water resources, increase the efficiency and productivity of agriculture in the long term, and enable water users’ associations (agricultural development groups, or ADGs) to self-manage their irrigation systems.
The project concerns the second phase of the 1,175-ha project covering the El Battane, Zouitina Nord, Zouitina Sud and Mehrine Nord schemes.
Services provided:
Specific engineering assignments:
- Coordination with the CRDA and KfW, support to project management
- Drawing up of detailed works design and plans
- Definitive marking of irrigation hydrants and coordination with the CRDA on land-tenure aspects
- Drafting of a project report including design calculations, geotechnical reconnaissance work, laboratory tests, etc.
- Works supervision
- Commissioning
Specific support-measures assignments:
Component 1 – Support to the AGDs
- Information-sharing and mobilisation of stakeholders (information-sharing initiatives, participatory awareness-raising workshops, participatory preparation of an action plan for upgrading the AGDs)
- Training for AGDs (development and delivery of training courses
- Assistance and support to AGDs (adaptation of the contractual framework between AGDs and the CRDA, as well as between AGDs and farmers)
- Support measures
Component 2 – Support to the CRDA
- Assistance to the CRDA in mobilising compensation for farmers
- Training for CRDA members: development and delivery of training courses
- Support in the development of GIS information systems

Component 3 – Training for farmers
- Water-saving: awareness-raising campaigns / how to save water
- Training on irrigation: support / pilot plots for irrigation
- Training on sustainable agriculture: assistance to farmers in terms of sustainable agricultural practices (biological and responsible farming)
