Project description
Plan Sierra is a non-governmental organisation in charge of a reforestation and management programme for the Yaque del Norte basin, with a view to reconciling water and environmental preservation with the development of economic activities (herding, agriculture, wood industries, drinking water supply, and hydropower).
The project set out to develop several scenarios for establishing a system of institutional governance in the Yaque Del Norte catchment area, in particular through the creation of a Basin authority to co-ordinate all water preservation initiatives.
Services provided:
The project was carried out in three phases, each one constituting a specific assignment:
- Organisation of a training week in France for a part of the Client’s board of directors, focusing on different systems used in France for the management of catchment areas, forest resources and water services
- A one-month specialist assignment to begin mapping stakeholders involved in the management of the basin. Several institutional design solutions and roadmaps were developed in order to implement an integrated strategy for the sustainable management of water resources in the basin
- Identification of priority projects to be implemented in order to support the setting up of a global and integrated management strategy for the basin. These projects focused mainly on reforestation, improved agricultural efficiency and decontamination
