Project description
This project seeks to help the Batticaloa and Ampara regions of eastern Sri Lanka to adapt to climate change. It also sets out to improve local livelihoods and farmers’ income in the long term, through integrated management of natural and non-natural resources in the Mundeni Aru basin.
Services provided:
- Redesign of main reservoirs
- Refurbishment plans for 8,000 ha of irrigated land downstream from Rugam
- Design of a new, 2,500-ha irrigation scheme downstream from Mahaoya, as well as the associated reservoir
- Project design review, including the results of flood-risk modelling and pre-feasibility studies regarding flood-risk management in the Mundeni Aru basin
- Study of various transfer options from upstream reservoirs to downstream reservoirs
- Development of the project’s 3rd component: support for the efficient use and sustainable management of water resources at all levels from individual plots to the basin as a whole (activities and costs), taking account of projects financed by other funding bodies in the water and agriculture sectors
- Review of the project’s organisational structure and institutional adjustments to ensure the durability of irrigation systems
- Detailed assessment of project costs, as well as contributions from government and other stakeholders
